Dunmanway Boxing Club 5K fundraiser took place recently.  Almost 100 participants of all levels of running experience togged out on the day as a display of support for Dunmanway’s local Boxing Club.

Dunmanway Boxing Club all began with series of discussions between Dunmanway Family Resource Centre and some local youths in 2010. The club have had highs and lows since its’ inception and the main challenge has been financial.  There are over eighty members of the club, ranging from ages 8 to age 18. In 2012, Cork County Council granted €5,000 towards the purchase of equipment, which was a great boost to this relatively new club.  One of the highlights of the club over the last number of years was the success of a young member,  Sean O’Brien, who won the County and Munster Championships in March/April 2011 and went on to fight at All-Ireland championship level.

The 5K fundraiser was primarily organised by the Boxing Club’s own volunteer coach, Jim Smith. Jim recruited some of his work colleagues from Avery Dennison to help out on the day while others opted to show support by putting on their running shoes and taking part.  The company was thanked by Dunmanway Family Resource Centre and the Boxing Club for their support for the race and for their ongoing involvement with the club.
