Dunmanway pledges to support Veronica

One thousand people will gather in the West Cork town of Dunmanway this Saturday for the first in a series of healthy activities organised by locals in support of local Operation Transformation leader, Veronica Horgan.

Veronica’s parents, Charlie and Marie Horgan, are volunteers with the Dunmanway Family Resource Centre and last Wednesday, 30 people attended a meeting at the DFRC centre to plan a schedule of physical activities to support the 24 year old, who aims to loose 6 stone on the popular RTE programme.

“Veronica’s parents, Charlie and Maria, are very involved in our community garden project, which is funded by Safefood Ireland, which is also sponsoring Operation Transformation, so we are encouraging local people to come behind Veronica in her journey through the Operation Transformation programme.” Says DFRC manager, Tracey Holt.

Ms. Holt said Wednesday’s meeting was to coordinate the local support for Veronica who is an employee with South Western, Clonakilty.

One of the first events in support of Veronica is a 5K walk next Saturday, organised by the Cork Sports Partnership in conjunction with the Dunmanway Family Resource Centre. Events will be staged as the TV series progresses.

“It’s about supporting Veronica and also about promoting healthy lifestyles.” Ms. Holt said.

The walk will start from the Dunmanway Family Resource Centre at 10am Saturday – it’s free to enter and it’s healthy.

“Such walks are a way to get people healthy and fit – Veronica will be in attendance on the day also” said Ms. Holt who also said the organisers are expecting several hundred and perhaps even 1,000 walkers to attend on the day.

“This will be a big event for Dunmanway and a lot of the community and business organisations are involved in helping to organise the walk” she said.

Last night, Charlie and Maria, kicked off a two month programme of activities, launching weekly walking groups, which will undertake a 45 minute walk from the SuperValu car park, in Dunmanway at 7:30pm every Monday throughout Operation Transformation’s durations.

“Come along wear comfortable shoes and high visibility vest” said Ms. Holt, who added that anyone who did not have a high visibility vest could borrow one from DFRC by contacting the centre in advance of the walk on (023) 8856 818.

A series of other activities including, walking, Zumba, boxercise and much more is being planned she said.

Local fitness instructors and Zumba teachers would be offering their services free in a variety of activities in the coming weeks (see below for details) she said.

“We at Dunmanway Family Resource Centre are getting behind Veronica, Charlie and Maria in this journey over the next few weeks” said Ms. Holt.
